Read Aloud

Have a PDF, Word doc, .txt file or pasted text read aloud, with the current word highlighted as it's spoken. Nothing is uploaded, your browser does the talking.

How it works

  1. Type or paste any text, or drop in a PDF, Word (.docx) or .txt file.
  2. Pick a voice and adjust speed, pitch and volume.
  3. Click "Play", the current word highlights as it's read. Pause, resume or stop any time.

This uses your browser's built-in text-to-speech engine, the same one behind your operating system's accessibility reader, so available voices depend on your browser and OS. Everything runs locally, nothing you type or upload is ever transmitted anywhere. There's no audio file download, browsers don't provide a reliable way to capture synthesized speech to a file, so this is for listening in the browser rather than exporting an audio file. PDF text extraction is best-effort, it won't pull text from a scanned image without OCR.
